Wimbledon Format & History

History

Wimbledon, officially known as The Championships, Wimbledon, is the world's oldest and undeniably the most prestigious tennis tournament. Its origins date back to 1877 when the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club held a gentlemen's singles competition on its grounds near London.

The tournament quickly gained popularity, and in 1884, ladies' singles and gentlemen's doubles were added. Wimbledon has maintained its tradition of grass court tennis and is the only Grand Slam tournament still played on this surface.

Format

Wimbledon follows a traditional knockout tournament format. There are five main events: Gentlemen's Singles, Ladies' Singles, Gentlemen's Doubles, Ladies' Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.  Junior competitions, as well as a variety of invitational events, also take place.

The tournament unfolds across two weeks. Matches are typically best-of-five sets for men and best-of-three sets for women. The 'Middle Sunday', historically a rest day, has been used for play in recent years when rain disrupts the schedule.  Wimbledon famously maintains a strict all-white dress code for players,  adding to its unique traditional atmosphere.

Wimbledon's history, pristine grass courts, and dedication to tradition have cemented it as an iconic event in the sporting world.
