Ben Shelton faces a daunting challenge against Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16 at the 2024 BNP Paribas Open.
- Ben Shelton vs Jannik Sinner – Tips and Prediction
Ben Shelton will attempt to improve his less-than-impressive performance last year at Indian Wells, but he will face a rampaging Jannik Sinner on Tuesday. Shelton crashed out in the second round of last year’s edition and is bidding for his first quarterfinal appearance at a home Masters tournament.
The American youngster reached the semifinals of his home Grand Slam in 2023, but Novak Djokovic silenced him. Sinner jumped to his career-high ranking of World No. 3 by lifting his first-ever Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year. The 22-year-old has also picked up an ATP 500 title in Rotterdam. The Italian is yet to lose a match this season.
Shelton has played Sinner twice so far on the ATP tour, with the head-to-head split at 1-1. Both players are comfortable on hard courts, and both their previous meetings were on hard courts in 2023 at the Vienna Open and the Shanghai Masters. Sinner beat Shelton comfortably in straight sets, 7-6(2), 7-5, in Vienna. However, Shelton came from a set down with a vengeance to take the Shanghai meeting in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(5).
The World No. 16 has struggled since his semifinal run at the US Open last year and currently has a win-loss record of 8-5 so far in 2024. The 21-year-old’s best result this year came at the ATP 250 tournaments in Auckland and Dallas, where he made the semifinals. He did reach the last eight of the ATP 500 in Acapulco but was ousted by Casper Ruud.
