Wolverhampton Wanderers will be happy to face a championship side in such an important stage of the FA Cup as they bid to reach the semifinals for the second time in five years.
- Wolves vs Coventry - Tips and Preview
Four-time FA Cup winner Wolverhampton Wanderers last got their hands on the trophy in the year 1960. This year, they have been handed a gift from fate as they were drawn against championship side Coventry City in the quarterfinals, despite giants like Manchester United, Liverpool, and Newcastle United still in the draw.
Wolves head into this tie with a 2-1 home win over Fulham over the weekend. The win would be a confidence booster following a 0-3 drumming by Newcastle United in the previous gameweek. Gary O’Neil’s side has been confident at their home stadium this season, losing just four games out of 14 played at the Molineux. Wolves have won four of their last five games, with just the one loss against Newcastle.
Coventry, on the other hand, head into this fixture with two losses in their last five games. They were beaten by West Bromwich Albion and Preston North End in the championship. This is also the first time Coventry face a top-flight club in the FA Cup, having cruised past lower-league clubs so far. The Sky Blues are the lowest-ranked side left in this year’s FA Cup, playing in the quarterfinals for the first time in 15 years.
O’Neil will be without Pedro Neto, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, and Hee-Chan Hwang and striker Matheus Cunha also seems doubtful for the fixture with a hamstring problem. Coventry meanwhile, will miss Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Jamie Allen, who are both out for a long duration.
Wolves vs Coventry - Tips and Prediction
Gary O’Neil has done a great job with this Wolves side since taking charge just before the 2023/24 season started. Many expected the club to be battling for relegation, but instead, they are placed ninth, just two points shy of the seventh-placed West Ham United, and a European spot. Coventry, meanwhile, have also done well, especially in the FA Cup, securing high-scoring victories, and are within touching distance of the Championship playoffs for a second season in a row.
However, given the Wolves’ form and success this year and the home advantage in the West-Midlands derby, the oddsmakers' money is on the home side to cruise to a comfortable win.
Verdict
Wolves to win.
