Panama Liga Pro Format & History
The Panama Liga Pro, formerly known as the Liga Panameña de Fútbol (LPF), traces its roots back to the mid-1980s when the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANAPROF) was founded in 1988. The inaugural season of the ANAPROF featured six teams, with the first match played on February 26, 1988.
The league has undergone several changes throughout its history, including a schism between the ANAPROF and a rival league, LINFUNA, from 1994 to 1996. However, the two leagues merged in 1996-97, forming a single twelve-team tournament.
In 2009, the ANAPROF officially changed its name to Liga Panameña de Fútbol (LPF), and in 2021, the league underwent a major restructuring, adopting a franchise system and expanding from ten to twelve teams. The Panama Liga Pro continues to be the pinnacle of professional football in Panama, attracting passionate fans and showcasing the country's finest footballing talent.
The top tier of professional football in Panama, the Panama Liga follows a two-stage format divided into the Apertura and Clausura tournaments. Each tournament consists of a regular season and a final stage.
The regular season is played in a one-and-a-half round-robin format, with each team facing their conference rivals twice (home and away) and playing each team from the opposing conference once. The top three teams from each conference advance to the final stage.
The final stage kicks-off with two rounds of single-elimination playoffs, with the second-placed teams from each conference facing off against the third-placed teams. The winners of these matches progress to the semifinals, where they face the first-placed teams from their respective conferences in a two-legged series.
The two semifinal winners then meet in the final to battle it out for the Panamanian crown.
