Liga MX Format & History
The Mexican Liga MX season is divided into two tournaments: the Apertura (opening tournament) and the Clausura (closing tournament). Each tournament consists of a regular season and a playoff phase.
Regular Season
During the regular season, each team plays every other team once, home and away. This results in a total of 17 games for each team. The top four teams in the regular-season standings automatically qualify for the playoff phase.
Playoff Phase
The playoff phase consists of a quarterfinals, semifinals, and a final. The quarterfinals and semifinals are played over two legs, while the final is played over a single leg. The winner of the final is crowned the champion of the tournament.
There is currently no promotion or relegation in Liga MX. However, this is expected to change in the near future.
Apertura and Clausura Championships
The winner of each tournament is considered a champion. This means that there are two champions per season in Liga MX.
Campeón de Campeones
The two champions of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments play each other in a one-off match called the Campeón de Campeones (Champion of Champions) match. The winner of this match is considered the overall champion of Mexican football for that year.
