Copa America Format & History
The Copa América is the oldest international continental football competition in the world. Established in 1916, it is typically contested by the 10 South American national teams, along with two invited teams from other confederations.
Two nations stand tall as the undisputed champions of the Copa América: Uruguay and Argentina, each with a staggering 15 titles to their name.
Uruguay's reign began in the early years of the competition, claiming four consecutive championships from 1916 to 1924, a remarkable achievement that still holds the record for the longest winning streak in Copa América history. Argentina's dominance emerged later, but their impact on the tournament has been equally profound. The Albiceleste have claimed 15 titles, including their most recent triumph in 2021.
Format
Typically hosted by one of the South American countries, the format and qualification methods have varied over the years. Since 1987, the tournament has been held every two years, with the host country determined by CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation.
In 2024, sixteen teams will take part in an expanded format as the tournament returns to the USA for the second time after their hosting of the 2016 event. In next summer's finals, 16 teams will be divided into three groups of four, with each team playing each other once. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage, which consists of the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.
The tournament will be held from June 20 to July 16, with the final taking place at the legendary Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The tournament is expected to attract thousands of fans from all over the world and generate significant revenue, particularly with the likely participation of new stateside darling, Lionel Messi.
