Philippines PBA Format & History

The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is the premier professional basketball league in the Philippines. Founded in 1975, the PBA has a rich history and is known for its high level of competitiveness.

Since its foundation nearly fifty years ago, the PBA has produced many of the Philippines' best basketball players, including Alvin Patrimonio, Ronnie Magsanoc, and Ramon Fernandez. More recently, players like June Mar Fajardo, Marc Pingris, and Scottie Thompson have emerged as stars in the league.

The San Miguel Beermen are the most successful team in PBA history, with 23 championships to their name. Other teams with multiple championships include the Alaska Aces (14), Magnolia Hotshots Pambansang Manok (3), and Ginebra San Miguel (3).

Format

Structured around three conferences, the PBA season features the Philippine Cup, the Commissioner's Cup, and the Governors' Cup. In each conference, teams participate in a single-round robin format, leading to playoffs that determine the ultimate champion.

The oldest and most prestigious among the conferences is the Philippine Cup, exclusively open to Filipino players. The Commissioner's Cup and Governors' Cup allow teams to enlist one import player each.

Playoffs in the PBA follow a best-of-seven series format, with the successful team from each conference advancing to the pinnacle - the PBA Finals. These Finals, also a best-of-seven series, ultimately crown the winners as the PBA champion.
